Building on IoT Devices

What it is, how it got here, where it’s going, and how you can get involved.

The web is now full of “things” instead of just servers and clients… But don’t get too alarmed; these “things” are just a new type of client (or server). This session will explain how these “things” came on the scene, where their ecosystems are pushing the creation of new technology, and why web developers are in the best spot to make an impact. Topics covered will include common types of embedded systems, common communication protocols, server back-ends, and the emerging world of IoT platforms as a service.

After the talk, we’ll all get our hands dirty with an embedded device, a few sensors, and the internet.

What to Bring With You

  • Most supplies will be included, but feel free to bring anything you think might be useful, or feel free to bring your own IoT project to tinker with amongst friends.
  • For all 2016+ MacBook Pro users, make sure you have at a minimum a standard USB port adapter. If you have an SD card reader/writer, bring that along too.
  • In case of terrible bandwidth, go ahead and download/install these things:
